The Ascendant and Descendant are inseparable, forming the horizontal axis of the chart. The Ascendant is our first view of life – it reflects the story of our birth and our reception into the world, shaping our primary sense of identity and the role we feel we are here to play.
The Descendant is its mirror image – the opposite and shadow of the Ascendant. It symbolises a key aspect of our self-development, but one which we are not so conscious of, and which is so often evoked through relationships and projections. For Jung, the encounter with the shadow was the first stage of the individuation process, the alchemical nigredo, evoked strongly at midlife but indeed the task of a lifetime. The Descendant is the ‘secret self’ whose integration is central to self-realisation.
We will look at the meaning of the Ascendant and Descendant in turn, encompassing the complex around each that is formed from the sign, its planetary ruler, and aspects to it, as well as how they work together as an integrated axis. We will also look at what happens under transits to these points, as catalysts for our self-development.
