Psychologizing Sect Series – Night, Day, and Twilight Consciousness
In this 3-part webinar series, we will explore the ancient astrological concept of sect, the idea that certain planets, signs, houses, and even aspects are adherents or followers of either Night or Day. But where ancient astrology pursued the Daytime task of using sect to assess planetary condition and effectiveness, we will take a more psychological Nighttime approach, freeing ourselves from the distinctions of Day charts versus Night charts, and instead investigate the Day and Night spaces found in every chart – and the self-states (constellations of thoughts, feelings, sensations, desires, and relational orientations) that these represent psychologically.
We will explore the mythological stories and philosophical concepts of Day and Night, and specifically look at these concepts applied to planets, signs, houses, and aspects in the natal chart. Case studies drawn from long-term psychotherapy will examine how Night and Day consciousness emerge, recede, and pendulate at different times in life and in the process of fully embodying one’s inherent multiplicity over time.
We will also explore Twilight – a special in-between space and state of consciousness that describes astrology itself, as well as the domain of Mercury, traditional ruler of astrology who only ever appears in a twilit sky. Twilight consciousness bridges Night and Day and offers creative opportunities to each person and to astrologers in our work with clients. As well, we will consider how some special astrological phenomena – such as solar eclipses, literally the temporary entry of Night into Day – can be better understood through the lens of sect, psychologized.
In this webinar, we will introduce ancient sect doctrine, and explore especially its philosophical roots and the possibility of bringing psychological imagination to bear on it. We will distinguish the two sects of Day and Night, their planetary adherents, and the signs that were correlated to them. We will also introduce the concept of Twilight. We will then consider how this deepens and enriches our understanding of each of the planets and signs, as well as our understanding of how to engage and work with them in our lives, through case studies drawn from long-term psychotherapy and experiential astrology group work.

In this webinar, we will consider how the different astrological aspects operate to induce Day, Night, and Twilight processes in the psyche. The application of sect to aspects offers a profound means of understanding the interplay of intrapsychic and interpersonal processes that trend toward unity, coherence, and heroism; as well as intrapsychic and interpersonal processes that trend toward multiplicity, decentering, and vulnerability. Through the lens of night and day, we can view multiple systems of interaction and how these are ‘lit up’ by transiting and progressed aspects as well.

In this webinar, we will briefly explore hemispheric concepts of the Day and Night sectors of the chart. But we will primarily focus on two journeys through the houses based on the originating logic of the meanings of the twelve places: the diurnal motion of the Sun through the sky, clockwise through the chart. Adding a psychological and mythopoetic imagination to this leads us to see an underlying coherence in the structure of the houses that traces an underworld journey of Night (from Houses 8-3) and an upperworld journey of Day (from Houses 2-9). We will amplify these journeys through ancient mythology, and then consider how to apply this material to modern lives through delineating the meanings of planets in houses through case study.
