Doja Cat’s Planet Her

The sign rising at birth is infused into the character of a person’s life. Its ruling planet tells us something about the energy guiding that person into life’s rich experience. Pop star Doja Cat (Amala Ratna Zandile) was born with Libra rising, so Venus is her “chart ruler,” or we could say, her “guiding light.” With Venus is in Scorpio, she’s attuned her artistic expression toward the rich, scintillating, and color-saturated, and seems to delight in the expression of her sexuality.

Amala dropped out of high school at 16 to pursue a career in music. Already tapped into a deep well of creativity and source of personal power emanating from her Scorpionic Venus (which is also trine Saturn), she produced and recorded her music independently, releasing her first songs through SoundCloud. She released her first single, “So High,” in 2014, and her song “Say So,” from her second album Hot Pink broke through as her first top 10 single on the Billboard Hot 100.

True to Venus in Scorpio form, Doja Cat explores power dynamics in her work, especially those related to attraction, love and sex. The video for “Kiss Me More,” from her third studio album “Planet Her,” finds her in a sci-fi landscape in which she and her co-singer SZA (who has the Sun and Mars in Scorpio) toy with an astronaut who has landed on their planet. After seducing him they entrap him, and by the end of the video, we discover that Doja Cat and SZA have been collecting the male visitors to their planet and capturing them to use as pawns in their own video game. The video was a colossal success, garnering over 340 million views on Youtube as of this writing.

With Venus semi-sextile Mercury in Libra and Jupiter in Sagittarius, which are sextile each other, humor, playfulness and exuberance figure into her self-expression as well. Her videos are nothing if not lush, and highlight an adventurous spirit.

Venus stands out clearly as the guiding light in Doja Cat’s chart, but it seems to be so tied into her work, so what about career significators? While Venus isn’t directly aspecting her Leo MC, it does deposit its ruler, the Sun in Libra, giving us a strong example of the important role dispositors can play. In this example, all roads seem to lead to Venus – for Doja Cat, “Planet Her” is a source of inspiration and exploration through which her life’s purpose shines brightly.

Constantly searching for a more equitable co-regulation with the Earth and Stars. If I’m not negating the influence of the Plutocracy I’m faded on the beach looking for a natal chart more perfect than Rihanna’s.
