What Is Evolutionary Astrology?

Evolutionary astrology is a style of astrology that focuses on the growth and evolution of the soul, whether in this life or over multiple lifetimes. This approach to astrology is based on the belief that our souls are constantly evolving, and that the challenges we face in this lifetime are in an unfolding relationship with past-life experiences.

This approach to astrology was developed in the 1980s and 90s, and grew in popularity in the early 2000s, due to its two main popular teachers Steven Forrest and Jeffrey Wolf Green. This approach was directly inspired by the work of Dane Rudhyar, and some of his writings on the lunar nodes. For more on the history of the use of the name, see Steven Forrest’s blog post about the use of the term “evolutionary astrology”.

The Function of the Lunar Nodes

One of the key tenets of evolutionary astrology is the idea that the North and South Nodes of the Moon provide a gateway to understanding our soul’s journey. The North Node is said to represent the direction our soul is evolving towards, while the South Node represents our past-life experiences and patterns that we need to release or heal in order to move forward. By examining the placement of the North and South Nodes in a person’s birth chart, an evolutionary astrologer seeks to gain insight into the person’s karmic journey and the lessons they are here to learn in this lifetime.

The Importance of Pluto

Another important symbol in evolutionary astrology is the planetary body Pluto, which is interpreted as a symbol of deep undercurrents in the life can be provide doorways to transformation. Pluto is associated with the death and rebirth cycle, with transformative experiences, and represents the soul’s journey towards wholeness. In evolutionary astrology, the placement of Pluto in a person’s chart can indicate areas of intensity and potential for soul growth, as well as where the person may need to confront and release deep-seated patterns and beliefs.

Evolutionary astrology also places a strong emphasis on the outer planets – Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto – and their influence on the individual and on the collective evolution of consciousness. These planets represent higher states of consciousness and spiritual evolution, and their placement in a person’s chart can indicate the areas where the person is being called to awaken and evolve.

Free Will and Personal Choice

One of the unique facets of evolutionary astrology is its emphasis on free will and personal responsibility. While evolutionary astrologers believe that a person’s birth chart can provide valuable insight into their soul’s journey, it is ultimately up to the individual to make conscious choices that align with their soul’s purpose and path of growth.

In summary, evolutionary astrology is used by some astrologers as a powerful tool for gaining insight into the soul’s journey and the lessons we are here to learn in this lifetime. By analyzing the North and South Nodes, Pluto, and the outer planets, an evolutionary astrologer aims to provide guidance and support for those seeking to align with their soul’s purpose and evolution.
